After the Indian Premier League, it is the time for the London Olympics 2012. Sports lovers are eagerly waiting for the event to start. The event will start from 27 July 2012, which is not so far. This grand sports event will end on 12 August, 2012. The opening ceremony will be held on 27 July at the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford. This huge sports event will take place in about 28 venues across London and 26 different sports categories have been included in it.
Following a bid on 6 July, 2005 headed by the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and former Olympic champion Sebastian Coe, London was selected as the host city during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating New York City, Moscow, Madrid and Paris. London will become the 1st city to officially host the modern Olympic Games 3 times, having earlier done so in 1908 and in 1948. London's bid featured 28 sports, but the IOC voted to drop softball and baseball. Some of the sports included are football, handball, basketball, hockey, cycling, diving, swimming, marathon, fencing, water polo, athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, archery, taekwondo, boxing, table tennis, equestrian sports, rowing and sailing.
Badminton, one of the most dynamic Olympic sports made its full Olympic debut at Barcelona 1992. Asian countries including China, Indonesia and South Korea have won 23 of the 24 gold medals in badminton awarded since then. As mentioned earlier, 2012 Summer Olympics also includes Badminton. This game is scheduled to be played from 28 July to 5 August. The competitions will be held at Wembley Arena in London in front of around 6,000 viewers. Each country is limited to 3 athletes in each Singles event and 2 pairs (4 athletes) in each Doubles event, dependent on their world ranking in the list of 3 May 2012 that determines qualification. A total of 172 badminton players (85 men and 85 women, with two tbc by the host country) will compete for the medals in five events including Men's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Singles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.
All events begin with a preliminary stage in which the competitors are divided into groups and each player or Doubles pair plays against everyone else in their group. The 8 best pairs in the Doubles and 16 group winners in the Singles qualify for the knockout stage. This stage will eventually decide the winners. An umpire (in charge of the match) will ensure that the rules of the game are observed. He/she will also call out the score after each point. The umpire will be assisted by line judges to keep an eye on whether the shuttlecock lands in or out of the court.
