The countdown has almost begun; the 2012 London Olympics will knock the doors in coming days. The great sports event will be started from 27 July 2012 and ended on 12 August, 2012. On 27 July, the opening ceremony of the event will be held at the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford. The 2012 London Olympics will take place at about 28 venues across London and 26 other different sports categories have been included in it.
Initially, 28 sports were selected to be played in the event, but the International Olympic Committee voted to drop softball and baseball. Some of the sports like football, handball, basketball, diving, swimming, hockey, cycling, marathon, fencing, water polo, athletics, boxing, table tennis, badminton, indoor volleyball, beach volleyball, archery, taekwondo, equestrian sports, rowing and sailing are included. Volleyball has also been included in the event. Beach volleyball and Indoor Volleyball are the two different types of the game. Both these games will be played at the London Olympics 2012.
Beach Volleyball is one of the most popular spectator sports at the Olympics. This game made its Olympic debut in 1996 at Atlanta. At London, it will start from 28 July and end on 9 August. 48 men and 48 women will participate in the Beach volleyball. There will be 24 teams (2 athletes per team) competing in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Each country is limited to 1 men’s and 1 women’s team. This game will be held at a special temporary arena on Horse Guards Parade, just steps from Trafalgar Square. The arena will be covered in 3,000 tones of sand.
Both the men’s and women’s Beach Volleyball events will be begun with a preliminary phase. The 24 teams in each event will be divided into 6 pools of 4 and each team will play against every other team in the pool. A total of 16 teams from this phase will qualify for the knockout phase. The top 2 teams from each pool and the best 2 third-ranked teams will advance automatically. The 4 remaining third-ranked teams play a two-match lucky loser round; the 2 winning teams in the lucky loser round will also qualify for the elimination phase. The winners of the semi-finals will finally go head-to-head for the gold medal. 2 referees supervise each game. One will sit on an elevated chair at the side of the court and the second will be positioned on the other side of the court. They will be assisted by scorers and line judges.
Indoor Volleyball made its Olympic debut in 1964 at Tokyo. This year, the game will start from 28 July and end on 12 August. 288 players (144 men and 144 women) will compete for the medals. There will be total 12 teams competing in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with 12 athletes in each team (6 players and 6 substitutes). Each country is limited to 1 men’s and 1 women’s team. The competition will be held at the Earl’s Court, London.
Both the men’s and women’s Indoor Volleyball competitions will begin with a preliminary phase. The 12 teams for each event are divided into 2 pools of 6. Each team will play with every other team in the pool. The 8 best teams (top 4 from each pool) from this phase will qualify for the knockout phase. The winners of the semi-finals will finally go head to head for the gold. All matches will be the best of 5 sets, with the first 4 sets going to 25 points. The 5th set goes to 15 points and all sets must be winning with at least a 2-point advantage. 2 referees will oversee each game. One will sit on an elevated chair at the side of the court while the second will be positioned on the other side of the court. They will be assisted by scorers and line judges.
