The entire world is very thrilled for the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Water Polo is one of the exciting sports events of the 2012 London Olympics. Water Polo was started back in the nineteenth century. It is a water version of rugby that is usually played in rivers and lakes. This very demanding sport has been featured on each and every Olympics programme ever since the Paris 1900 Games. For London Olympics 2012, the Water Polo is scheduled from 29th July to 12th August 2012. The venue for Water Polo game is the Water Polo Arena in the Olympic Park.
The Water Polo competition will be held as medal events, each for men and women. In total, around 104 women and 156 men will participate in this competition. Only one men’s team and one women’s team is permitted from each participating country. Overall, there will be 12 men’s team and 8 women’s team for this event. One team will have 13 players. However, only 7 players will be allowed to play in the water.
The 7 member team will play Water Polo in a pool with a goal at each ends. Both the men’s and women’s team will begin the competition with group play. The teams are divided into 2 groups where each team will play against the other team in its group. Then preliminary rounds will begin where the winning team will get 2 points, 0 point for losing team, and 1 point in case of draw. Progressively, the competition will enter into quarter-final and semi-final rounds and finally the top two teams will compete for the gold.
