The sports lovers must be eagerly waiting for the 2012 Olympic to begin. As the days are passing by, the Olympic Games are about to begin. Fencing is one of the exciting sports of 2012 London Olympics. Fencing first started in the modern Olympic Games at Paris in the year 1896. Three types of weapons are used in fencing - Foil, Epée and Sabre. During 1896, Fencing consisted of men’s Foil and Sabre events and Epée was introduced later on in 1900. As the years passed by, women also participated in Fencing. The first Women’s Foil was featured in the year 1924 at Paris. Later, Epee and Sabre started in the year 1996 and 2004 respectively for women.
Fencing takes place on piste that is 14 metres long and amid 1.5m and 2m wide. In this game, hits are scored by hitting the other player with the tip of the weapon by using the Foil and heavier Epée. On the other hand, Sabre hits are commonly scored with the edge of the weapon. While using Foil and Sabre only one fencer can score a hit at a time, but Epée lets both the fencers to score at the same time. Individual Fencing has three phases that lasts for three minutes, until one fencer scores 15 hits against his/her opponent. During the team event, 3 fencers compete against their challengers over a series of nine three-minute bouts with the aim of gathering a maximum of 45 hits to win.
