London Olympics 2012 Football Game: Dates & Schedule

The whole world is eagerly waiting for the great London Olympics 2012 to begin. And the countdown has begun, as the London Olympics 2012 will start from 27 July, 2012. This grand sports event will continue till 12 August, 2012. The opening ceremony will take place at the new Olympic Stadium in Stratford on 27 July. As the games are scheduled to be held in months of July-August, the summer weather would definitely encourage not only locals of London but also numerous international visitors from across the world to witness the Olympics.

Top athletes from more than 205 countries will compete in 26 different sports category in about 28 venues. It is expected that over 17,000 athletes will participate in the Olympics. Majority of the events are planned to be held at the Olympics Stadium. Few of the events will take place in locations of London while remaining events will be held in other parts of Wales, England and Scotland. Sports lovers can enjoy a huge variety of athletic events and competitions like athletics, football, basketball, handball, hockey, cycling, diving, swimming, fencing, marathon, water polo, badminton, archery, beach volleyball, taekwondo, boxing, equestrian sports, table tennis, rowing and sailing.

Football is one of the most popular games in the world. Obviously, football will be one of the main features of the Olympic Games at London. Because of the tight schedule of the Olympics, the Football matches are scheduled to begin from 25 July i.e. two days before the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. The Football competition will begin with group matches and end with a knockout phase. There will be 2 medal events, one for women and one for men’s teams.

In women’s tournament, the teams will be divided into three groups while for men’s tournament the teams will be divided into four groups. The best 8 teams will be qualified for the quarter-finals. Then the competitions will be played in a knockout format where two winning semi-finalists will play for the gold medal and the two losing semi-finalists for the bronze.

As different events are arranged at various locations, viewers seem to get confused about which event will take place in which location and on what date.
